Fut Jensen's photographs from the Kosmos III voyage

Introduction

This is a complete index of the still photos from the Kosmos assignment which survived Fut Jensen's death in 1983. Fut's personal photo archive and collection of personal documents comprises three folders, which may have been organised by Fut himself, or by Fut's friend who in turn inherited the material following Fut's death. It is not therefore clear to the producers as to how complete this collection is, and to whom its organisation is to be attributed.

We have separated the collection into photos, documents and letters, cataloging each in the order in which they lay in the folders. There are a number of duplicates - two or more versions of the same photograph, possibly with different printing exposures or cropping, often of differing technical quality. We have catalogued these as separate items, in the order in which they were found. Similarly there are a number of documents - especially Fut's personal correspondance which appear in duplicate as carbon copies, often without Fut's signature. Where such duplicates are identical, we have only scanned and cataloged the one which gives the best image.

Many photos can be only identified on the basis of our understanding of the subject matter, whilst some photos have hand or typewritten captions - presumably written by Fut Jensen. As part of their working relationship, Hakon Mielche used many of Fut Jensen's still photographs in his own publications, including a book about the 1948/49 Kosmos III voyage entitled "There she blows!" (Danish original title "Hval i sigt!") published by William Hodge & Company, London 1952. A printing error erroneously attributes Fut's photography to Mielche, but Mielche makes it clear in the book (p.23) that Fut is the photographer. Fut sailed with Kosmos III from Sandefjord without Mielche, who sailed with another of Jahre's vessels and joined him in Walvis Bay later in the year. Mielche's book contains several photos from the voyage which one can presume to be the work of Fut Jensen, though these photographs have not been found in Fut's collection. (The collection includes several hundred negatives which, as yet, have not been cataloged - these could include the missing photographs). Some of the photos include Fut Jensen, therefore one must assume that another - possibly Hakon Mielche took these photos.

The original photos were typically 8 x 10 cm. These were scanned at 24 bit RGB 300 d.p.i. giving a typical resolution of approx 1600 x 975 pixels, and archived in TIFF format. The archive filenames of the originals is in the format Fut###.tif commencing with 001. For the website archive, all photos have been rescaled to three sizes 245, 500 and 640 pixels wide/high (depending on landscape or portrait format) with filenames Fut###S.jpg , Fut###M.jpg and Fut###W.jpg respectively. These images are of lower resolution, but suitable for this website. This page is slow to load, so be patient! Rescaling and cropped versions for the TV production will be at 768 x 576 pixels in full colour / monochrome TIFF format and will have the filename format Fut###T.tif
