Following the 1946 convention, the Committee for Whaling Statistics was established in Sandefjord, Norway. The organisation collected and published harvest statistics each year, a task which including collating the records for the years before the committees establishment resulted in harvest data for each year from 1910 until 1983. In 1984 this responsibility was taken over by the International Whaling Commission in Cambridge, England which for 1984/5 continued to collect and publish harvest data in the same format. In the years since the fall of the USSR, the IWC has had access to previously restricted Soviet harvest data, which revealed that Soviet data for the years preceding 1972. The data from the Norwegian office which pertains to the Soviet Union must therefore be considered unreliable. IWC harvest data for the years since 1984, has been collated in a new format, and existing data from 1970 to 1984 has been reformatted to allow comparison.
